Valuable nature on Ornö

Lustehagen, on Ornö in Haninge municipality, was an area of valuable nature until the 1970s. After a lack of maintenance, especially in the last 20 years, there is a great need to restore and then manage Lustehagen in the long term through mowing and grazing.

About the project

The Nature Conservation Association in Haninge is driving the project to restore Lustehagen on Ornö. The area will become a scenic gem worth visiting, not least for hikers along the new hiking trail Stockholm Archipelago Trail.

The project will benefit various local businesses and contribute to increased nature tourism. But above all, the project is based on close cooperation between the Nature Conservation Association, Ornö's local heritage association, landowners, and local entrepreneurs/farmers. The long-term management of Lustehagen will involve enjoyable events such as haymaking and mowing, as well as scythe courses and training in traditional land use.

Through a collaboration with Ornö school, students will learn about practical nature conservation and the meaning of biological diversity. The youth activities on the island will be offered opportunities to participate in the project through scythe courses and at mowing gatherings.
