Landscape maintenance in the archipelago

The agricultural island Svartsö once had as many as eight farms that cultivated the land. Today, with only one farm, the fields are quickly overgrowing and the open cultural landscape is threatened. The need to open up overgrown areas, preserve already open pastures, and promote species-rich areas is significant.

The purpose of the project is to contribute to the preservation of the cultural landscape and biological diversity. Through the project, employment will also increase. As the conditions for increased grazing improve, the need for work in conservation restoration and animal husbandry will rise.

A living cultural landscape has several values; it increases local employment, promotes biological diversity, and offers the tourism industry attractive environments.

With the support, Abborrvass Lantbruk can purchase equipment such as arch sheds, flail mowers, and virtual fences needed to manage valuable lands. Virtual fences will facilitate daily operations and reduce fencing costs while opening up new opportunities for grazing on lands that have previously been difficult to use. Thanks to the project support, the company can now expand its important work in caring for and keeping the landscape open while creating more job opportunities on Svartsö and nearby islands.
